Real Heroes: Firefighters and EMS of Black Jack Fire Protection District
The EMS team is responsible for providing emergency medical care and medical transport. BJFPD employs 27 paramedics and 11 EMTs Beginning in December (2023), the District will transition to its own ambulance service to provide emergency transport to the community.

In addition to providing fire suppression and emergency response services, the District manages all building permits; commercial occupancies (businesses, schools, churches, apartment complexes, hospitals) within the District are responsible for securing any necessary permits for new construction projects and additions/renovations. The History and Mission of Black Jack FPD
For nearly 100 years, the Black Jack Fire Protection District has served the city and its surrounding communities, responding to emergency medical calls, aiding in rescues, and protecting lives and property during fire emergencies. Meet the District Leadership
Fire Chief Roger Ellison, Assistant Fire Chief Paul Peebles, and Chief Medical Officer Drew Kerckhoff lead a team of 43 firefighters and emergency personnel (27 paramedics and 11 EMTs). Fire Chief Ellison, Assistant Fire Chief Peebles, and Chief Medical Officer Drew Kerckhoff entered the District’s core leadership roles in May 2023.
EMS Team
The EMS team is responsible for providing emergency medical care and medical transport. BJFPD employs 27 paramedics and 11 EMTs. Beginning in December (2023), the District will transition to a new internal EMS team to provide emergency care to the community; BJFPD currently contracts its EMS services typically through Christian Hospital, Northwest Healthcare, or DePaul Hospital
Rescue Teams
District crew members are highly skilled in emergency rescue response. Rescue teams assist other Districts in managing water rescues, high-angle rescues, and vehicle extrications.
Several District crew members also participate in regional and/or national urban rescue efforts. We have team members who are part of the St. Louis County Hazardous Materials Response Team.
Communities Served by BJFPD
Our emergency response service area encompasses the city of Black Jack, areas of Dellwood and Florissant, and parts of unincorporated North County. In total, the District protects more than 26 square miles.
